Apple dumps Samsung for TSMC

01/02/2013 16:24

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has reportedly been contacted by Apple to manufacture the new A6X chip. TSMC is the world’s largest semiconductor foundry. Apple was making the chip at Samsung, but with all of the fighting between the two over the last year they went their own ways. Apple will make the A6X chip with TSMC for a trial period in the first quarter. Also in that trial period Apple will be watching closely to see if they are keeping up with the demand of chips needed to power all of the devices that they are producing. The move will be a big risk on Apple because Samsung has been responsible for many of Apple’s chips in the recent years. The move so late in the production of the iPhone 5S has some people wondering if Samsung knows what chip is in the iPhone 5S, but reports say that Apple did not collaborate with Samsung on any part of the chip in the 5S.
